Neurodevelopmental Disorders - Diagnostic Assessments

I provide diagnostic assessments for Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) .

I have several years of clinical experience working with clients with complex neurodevelopmental disorders and disability .

I follow the Australian National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and National Guidelines for the Assessment and Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) which involve the following recommendations:

  • The assessment and diagnosis of ASD involves a strengths-focused approach which identifies the strengths, skills, interests, resources as well as the limitations and support systems of the individual, their caregiver(s) and/or support people,
  • The assessment and diagnosis of ASD aims to identify the unique needs, strengths and contexts of the person undergoing assessment and their broader family unit through the collaboration between the individual, their families and the professional.
  • The assessment and diagnosis of ASD follows a holistic framework and is based on the best available research evidence.

The Diagnostic Assessment involves the following process:

  1. A comprehensive needs assessment is conducted to identify the individual’s key strengths, challenges and needs to inform future clinical management and service delivery.
  2. A holistic assessment of functioning to determine the individual’s level of functioning and needs.
  3. A progressive approach to diagnostic formulation, whereby additional clinical investigations are based on the clinical complexity of the individual.
  4. The assessment process can be flexible and adapted based on the clinical history of the individual.

Diagnostic Assessments Process typically involves:

  •  An Intake Interview with parents/care givers using the Autism Diagnostic Interview – revised (ADI-R).
  • Diagnostic Assessment Testing with the individual (ADOS-2 or MIGDAS)/
  • Administration of the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) and a wide range of standardized assessment measures for child, adolescent, and adult disorders.
  • Comprehensive assessment of adaptive functioning using the Pedi-Cat or Vinelands Adaptive Behaviour Scales or WHODAS.
